Phillip Andrade has spent more than forty years in ministry—long enough to have been a shepherd to teenagers, served as a missionary in Japan, and weathered two long-term senior pastorates in New England without losing his sanity or his sense of humor. Along the way, he earned a B.A. in Archaeology, an M.Div. in Theology, and a D.Min. in Leadership Development, proving that he is both somewhat educated and capable of sitting through very long monotone lectures.
To support his pastoral habit over the years, he has moonlighted as a police officer, graphic designer, and firearms instructor—which means he can preach a sermon, design the bulletin, and arrest you for not reading it thoroughly. He also dabbles in bladesmithing because nothing says “well-rounded pastor” like forging sharp objects.
He and his wife have been married for over forty years, have four children, and enjoy a plethora of grandchildren—a biblical word meaning “more than you can conveniently count.” Now embracing the role of author, he brings together wisdom, shenanigans, and the wounds of ministry to encourage others follow Jesus fully.

What Your Pastor Wish You Knew
Spiritual Drifts That Grieve the Heart of a Shepherd
Every pastor carries a quiet grief.
It is the ache of watching people they love settle for a faith that barely resembles the life Jesus promised. Empty seats. Unopened Bibles. Silent witnesses. Comfortable Christianity that looks no different from the world around it. These are the spiritual drifts that break a shepherd’s heart.
Drawing from more than four decades of ministry across cultures and congregations, Dr. Phillip Andrade opens the pastoral heart with rare honesty. This is not a lecture from a distant authority. It is a tearful confession from a shepherd who loves his flock—and who includes himself in every challenge he raises.
Through seven areas of spiritual drift—worship, the Word, evangelism, purity, eternal impact, service, and fellowship—this book invites you to examine the distance between where you are and where God is calling you to be.
What Pastors Wish You Knew is not a comfortable read. It is a necessary one. And it ends with the hope that changes everything.

THE JOURNEY
Four Decades
It began in the mid-1980s on the rocky coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, where a young Phillip Andrade, still complete with a full head of hair, took his first pastoral role shepherding youth and families at the Community Church of East Gloucester. Those early years—from 1986 to 1989—planted something deep: a conviction that most ministry happens not from behind a pulpit, but in the middle of people’s lives.
From Gloucester, he moved south to Falmouth Baptist Church, serving as Associate Pastor from 1989 to 1992. It was there he began to sense a wider calling—one that would eventually carry him across the Pacific Ocean to Sendai, Japan.
The years in Japan, from 1992 to 1997, reshaped everything. Serving in Japan meant learning to communicate ancient truths across a vast cultural divide—a skill that would serve him well for the rest of his career. When he returned to New England, it was with a deeper understanding of what it means to bring the whole of yourself to the work ministry.
Back in Massachusetts, Phillip took the call as Senior Pastor of Hope Church in Sharon, where he served for twenty years—from 1997 to 2017. Two decades in one congregation means you baptize a lot of new believers and eventually officiate their weddings. You sit with families in hospital rooms and at kitchen tables. You watch a community grow and grieve and grow again.
In 2017, he accepted the call to West Dighton Christian Church in Dighton, Massachusetts, where he continues to serve as Senior Pastor today. Each season has brought new lessons, new challenges, and new confirmation that following Jesus is the most demanding—and rewarding—adventure a life can hold.
Four years in Japan taught me that the Gospel doesn’t need a Western accent—it just needs a willing heart and an embarrassing number of language mistakes.”
